A fundamental principle that must not be overlooked in the pursuit of emerging technology: the central role of humanity in shaping the future of AI.

Last month, I briefly highlighted why AI (Artificial Intelligence) literacy is going to be paramount in the near future. However, there's a deeper layer to explore beyond merely grasping the intricacies of emerging technology. In a world where the pace of technological advancement is staggering, it's easy to become enamored by AI and its boundless potential. Yet, amidst this whirlwind of this innovation, it's vital to maintain perspective—humanity, alongside the welfare of our wildlife and planet, must remain at the forefront.

At some point, if we come across AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), we'll need to find a way to work together. I'm not saying AGI is going to happen tomorrow (or is it?), but it's something to think about. In the meantime, we have a lot of work to do to ensure AI is used responsibly and ethically.

ChatGPT is incredibly limited, but good enough at some things to create a misleading impression of greatness. it's a mistake to be relying on it for anything important right now. it’s a preview of progress; we have lots of work to do on robustness and truthfulness.

Much like any tool, AI is neither inherently good nor bad; its ethical stance is determined by our approach and usage. It's imperative that AI development and deployment are conducted with responsibility, ethics and the well-being of humanity in focus. Ethical considerations extend to ensuring AI systems respect human rights, privacy and dignity. Moreover, individuals should have the autonomy to opt-in or out of AI systems; it's a bit bananas to not allow this. Transparency, accountability and the elimination of biases and discrimination are also paramount in ethical AI implementation.

Concerns regarding AI replacing human jobs are valid. However, it's essential to view AI as a tool to enhance human capabilities rather than supplant them. Instead of fixating on job displacement fears, let's explore how AI can empower individuals and communities, fostering increased productivity, creativity and an improved quality of life.

For those affected by job displacement, accessible opportunities for retraining and upskilling are crucial. This is where private and public sectors must collaborate to ensure a smooth transition.

AI's impact transcends technology; it shapes the fabric of society. It's imperative to consider the broader cultural, economic and societal ramifications of AI integration, ensuring equitable distribution of benefits and mitigation of risks. If we don't, we risk exacerbating existing inequalities.

To stick with the theme of balance — and while I'm really excited about how AI could make a difference in tackling major issues like improving healthcare, education, and fighting climate change — I also realize it might make some problems worse. That's why I believe it's crucial to use AI in a fair and inclusive way. We need to remember that AI isn't a magical solution for everything; at the end of the day, we can't forget the human factor.

As 2023 unfolds, I'm embracing the principle of "Human-led, AI-assisted" (or some variation of that). By keeping this guiding principle at the forefront, I believe we can navigate the AI revolution with humanity leading the way.
